Cagney, James 1899 - 1986. US actor. His physical dynamism and staccato vocal delivery made him one of the first stars of talking pictures. Often associated with gangster roles (for example, The Public Enemy 1931), he was an actor of great versatility, playing Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream 1935 and singing and dancing in Yankee Doodle Dandy 1942. He starred in Mr Roberts 1955, and One Two Three was his last film before retirement; but in 1981 he came back for Ragtime.
